The Weekend Bag Philosophy
I used to overpack for even the shortest trips. These days, with a busy life, a dog, and a pottery wheel in the garage, I’ve learned to travel lighter while still feeling good in every photo and situation.
This is my current weekend bag formula — proven through many mountain escapes, brewery crawls, and quick visits to friends.
The Bag Itself
I rotate between:
A medium canvas weekend bag (roomy but not bulky)
A leather duffel that elevates any outfit
A backpack with good structure for more active trips
All have good organization and can fit in overhead compartments if needed.
The 12-Piece Packing List
Tops (3)
Merino wool tee or lightweight long-sleeve – Base layer that doesn’t smell
Button-down shirt – Chambray or lightweight oxford for versatility
Light sweater or quarter-zip – For cooler evenings
Bottoms (2)
Dark jeans or stretch chinos – Work for everything
Flattering leggings or ponte pants – Comfort for travel and activities
Dresses & Layers (3)
One versatile midi dress or jumpsuit – Easy outfit maker
Lightweight jacket or denim shirt – Transition piece
Packable vest or rain shell – Weather insurance for Colorado
Shoes & Accessories (4)
Versatile sneakers or boots – One pair that does it all
Simple sandals or flats – For warmer moments
Jewelry – A few statement pieces that dress everything up
Scarf or bandana – Multi-use hero item
Outfit Formulas That Multiply
Day 1 – Arrival & Activity
Leggings + merino tee + quarter-zip + sneakers + denim shirt tied at waist
Day 2 – Morning Adventure
Jeans + button-down + vest + boots
Day 3 – Brunch or Return Trip
Midi dress + lightweight jacket + scarf + sandals
The same pieces mix and match across scenarios with minimal effort.

Packing Hacks That Actually Work
Roll don’t fold for wrinkle reduction
Use packing cubes for organization
Wear your bulkiest item on travel day
Choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle or show dirt easily
One color story makes mixing effortless
Denver Weekend Trip Considerations
Mountain weather changes fast — always have layers
Many activities involve dirt or dust — darker colors are forgiving
Good shoes are non-negotiable
Pack for variable temperatures between day and night
What I Leave Behind
Multiple pairs of shoes (one or two max)
Too many “just in case” outfits
Bulky toiletries (travel sizes or multi-use products)
Anything high-maintenance
My Current Weekend Bag Favorites
Everlane merino pieces
AGOLDE or similar great jeans
A well-worn leather jacket that works with everything
Blundstone boots
A great scarf that doubles as a blanket
The Freedom of Packing Light
There’s something liberating about knowing you can grab your bag and go without stress. You feel more present on the trip instead of worrying about your luggage.
This approach has made spontaneous weekends much more common in my life with James and Scout.
Try This Challenge
Next time you pack for a weekend, challenge yourself to bring less. You’ll be surprised how little you actually need when you choose versatile pieces.
