Why I Still Believe in Capsules (But Not the Rigid Kind)
Hey friends, every year when the light changes and the Front Range starts calling, I sit down and build a fresh capsule. Not because I need a total wardrobe reset, but because editing down to the essentials makes getting dressed easier and more enjoyable.
This spring I challenged myself to create a 12-piece capsule that could genuinely carry me through 30 days of real life in Denver. No unrealistic “10 pieces, 100 outfits” nonsense — just practical, mixable pieces that work for my actual days.
The 12 Pieces That Made the Cut

The Tops (4)
White Button-Down Shirt – Crisp but soft cotton with a relaxed fit
Striped Boatneck Tee – Breathable with a touch of stretch
Lightweight Merino Sweater – In a soft sage green that works with everything
Classic Chambray Shirt – Perfect layer for variable weather
The Bottoms (3)
Wide-Leg Cropped Jeans – High-rise, incredibly comfortable
Soft Ponte Knit Pants – Dressier but still stretchy
Lightweight Cargo Pants – For hiking days that turn into brunch
The Layers & Dresses (3)
Light Trench Coat – Beige, water-resistant, packs beautifully
Wrap Dress – In a flattering midi length that works for multiple body types
Denim Jacket – Slightly oversized for easy layering
The Shoes & Accessories (2 key supporting pieces)
White Leather Sneakers – Clean but not precious
Leather Sandals – Supportive with a low block heel
How the Math Actually Works in Real Life
30 Days of Outfits – Real Examples
Hiking-to-Brunch Days
Cargo pants + striped tee + denim jacket + leather sneakers + trench if it’s cool
Client Meeting Days
Wrap dress + chambray shirt as layer + white sneakers + trench coat
WFH Creative Days
Merino sweater + ponte pants + denim jacket + sandals
Weekend Brewery or Market Days
White button-down + wide-leg jeans + denim jacket + sneakers
The beauty is in the mixing. Almost every top works with almost every bottom, and the layers give me options for Denver’s famous spring temperature swings.
My Rules for Building This Capsule
Nothing dry-clean only – Everything must handle real life
Color palette – Neutrals with soft sage, warm terracotta accents, and denim
Fit priority – Everything had to pass the sit, move, and squat test
Versatility test – Each piece had to work with at least 4-5 others
Cost-per-wear focus – I prioritized quality on the pieces I wear most
Denver Spring Specific Adjustments
Our springs are windy, sunny, and unpredictable. That’s why the trench coat and layers were non-negotiable. I also made sure every outfit could handle a sudden trail walk with Scout or an impromptu pottery session.
What I Left Out (And Why)
Heavy sweaters (too warm for most days)
Anything too trendy or delicate
Multiple pairs of shoes (two good ones are better than five mediocre ones)
Statement pieces that only work with one or two other items
How to Build Your Own Spring Capsule
Start with what you already own – Do an honest audit
Identify your gaps – What do you reach for but don’t have?
Choose a color story – Makes mixing much easier
Test everything together – Lay it all out on your bed
Live with it for a week – Make adjustments before committing
You don’t need exactly 12 pieces. The number that works for you might be 10 or 15. The goal is fewer decisions and more wearing.
The Real Benefit Beyond the Clothes
Having a small, curated capsule reduces decision fatigue and makes me feel more creative with what I have. I spend less time worrying about what to wear and more time actually living.
It’s also been better for my budget and my conscience. Buying less but choosing better feels right.
My Favorite Outfit from This Capsule
The wrap dress with the chambray shirt tied over it, white sneakers, and the trench coat. It works for client meetings, lunch with friends, and even light hiking if needed. One outfit, multiple scenarios.
Your Turn
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your closet this spring, try the capsule approach. Start small — maybe just 8 pieces for two weeks. You might be surprised how freeing it feels.
What would make it into your spring capsule? Tell me in the comments. I love seeing how different lives call for different pieces.
Wear it and go, friends — spring in Denver is too good to waste time staring at a full closet.
